HARTINGTON — A Coleridge man is expected to be in court today on weapons and terroristic threat charges.
Nebraska State Patrol Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team and a police dog were used to apprehend Myron “Mike” Dirks, 49, who lives three miles east of Coleridge.
Dirks was arrested after a more than five-hour standoff with authorities following a domestic disturbance.
Dirks is being held in the Cedar County Jail in Hartington after being arrested for 1st degree Domestic Assault, 1st degree Assault, Terroristic Threats and use of a Fire Arm to Commit a Felony.
“Dirks was already on probation for obstructing justice — there is no doubt his probation will be revoked,” said Cedar County Attorney George Hirschbach.
Shortly after 9 p.m. Aug. 12, a 911 call was made concerning a domestic disturbance involving a weapon at the Dirks residence.
A male juvenile had fled the home to seek help for a female who was still inside the home on 874 Road. The Cedar County Sheriff’s Office then requested the assistance of the Nebraska State Patrol.
At 9:30 p.m. Rhonda Alberts was able to escape the home. She was taken to a Wayne hospital where she was treated and released.
The NSP SWAT team negotiated with Dirks, who had left his house and was located in a tree line near the residence. After refusing to comply with verbal directions a State Patrol K-9 was used to apprehend him.
“The officers used great discretion in apprehending him,” said Hirschbach. “Dirks received minor injuries to his arm and shoulder and was transported for medical treatment.”
Numerous weapons, ammunition, illegal controlled substances and drug paraphernalia were seized from inside the house after a search warrant was issued.
Officers learned Alberts has known Dirks for close to 40 years and has been staying with Dirks on occasion at his residence since 2008. According to Alberts, Dirks had started consuming alcoholic beverages at around 10 a.m. on Aug. 12 and continued through the day and evening.
Alberts reported Dirks became agitated and became verbally abusive and physical by grabbing her arm and bending it behind her head while placing a gun to her head.
Dirks is being held on an $85,000 bond and is awaiting a preliminary hearing in county court.
Dirks will more than likely be bound over to District Court due to the felonies according to Hirschbach.
