HARTINGTON — One-Stop is in the works for Cedar County tax payers.
Two Cedar County offices are looking at having a one-stop convenience put in place for tax payers who need to title and license a newly purchased vehicle.
Currently a stop is made at the Clerk’s office for a title and other related duties while the license, registration and sales tax are paid at the Treasurer’s office.
When the county offices relocate to the new addition that is expected to be completed in August of this year the duties of issuing motor vehicle titles and liens will transfer from the Clerk’s office to the Treasurer’s Office.
After the transfer everything will be done at the Treasurer’s office said Cedar County Treasurer Carol Wortman.
“It will make it easier for people who are licensing a vehicle,” said Wortman. “Since we will be moving we felt it was the prime time to make the change.”
The transfer of duties will also save tax payers some money down the road.
“The equipment is aging out. The state will only have one set of equipment to replace,” said Wortman.
County Clerk Dave Dowling said there is another reason for the push to complete all of the business in one office.
“Some people come in and get a title but they do not go on to the Treasurer’s Office and license the vehicle. The State is losing out on sales tax on some of these transactions,” said Dowling.
Forty-seven counties across Nebraska have already combined these processes.
A bill is currently before the Legislature that would require counties to consolidate these functions in the office of the Treasurer no later than January 1, 2011.
