Ban will snuff out smoking next week

COLERIDGE  — So long smoke, hello clean air.
A statewide smoking ban takes effect on June 1.
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and local health departments will be working with businesses to help them comply with Nebraska’s new smoke-free law.
On June 1, every indoor workplace and public place in Cedar County, as well as across the state, must be smoke-free. The act was designed to protect the public health and welfare of people.

Relay for Life slated for this weekend

HARTINGTON –  Cedar County walkers will go around the clock in the battle against cancer during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life which will be held in Hartington this weekend.
Teams of enthusiastic citizens will gather at the Hartington Community Complex for an overnight relay from 7 p.m. on May 30 until 7 a.m. on May 31.

Memorial Day keeps family coming ‘home’ year after year

COLERIDGE — Observing Memorial Day remains a strong tradition for a family that grew up in Coleridge.
The parents, Clarence and Helen Vock, are now deceased, but the lessons of patriotism and the importance of decorating graves on Memorial Day still linger on with their children.
Even though all but one of the six children have moved away, most of them still return to Coleridge every year to decorate the graves of family members and honor the veterans.
“It was a part of life at our house when we were growing up,” said Jacie Burbach. “You did not make any other plans for Memorial Day.”
This year was no different as the families of Jim Vock, Joan (Vock) Cautrell, Jacie (Vock) Burbach and Julie (Vock) Murphy stopped by area cemeteries and gathered at the Burbach home in Coleridge for a time of fellowship.

Wemhoff places sixth at state meet

OMAHA — The 2009 Class D State Track Meet was one of both highs and lows for the Coleridge teams. The Lady Bulldogs had one qualifier, Senior Sophie Wemhoff, in the Shot Put, while the Bulldogs sent two qualifiers, Seniors Seth Schroeder in the 400 and Tyler Hefner in the 200.
Schroeder and Hefner both participated in their events in the late afternoon and early evening hours Friday. Wemhoff threw for her event Saturday.

Obituary - Helen S. Heikes

COLERIDGE — Helen S. Heikes, 85, Coleridge, died May 20, 2009, at the Hillcrest Care Center, Laurel.
A memorial service was held May 22 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Coleridge, with the Rev. Andreas Stein officiating.
A private family burial at the Coleridge City Cemetery occurred prior to the memorial service.
Wintz Funeral Home, Coleridge, was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Helen’s grandchildren, Tiffany Sauer, Clark Willms, Brian Heikes, Lori Heikes, Chad Mathine, Lauren Welch, Melissa Laehr, John Rusch, Amanda Rusch and Luke Rusch.

Obituary - David Lewis Graham

AVOCA, Iowa — David Lewis Graham, 86, Avoca, Iowa, died May 21, 2009, at the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center.
David was born on April 20, 1923, to Frank and Myrtle (Lewis) Graham in Arriba, Colo. Shortly after he was born, David and his family moved to Coleridge, where David was baptized at Pilgrim Congregational Church and attended country school at Lincoln District 37.

CLEAR LAKE, Minn. — Robert P. Seibert, 88, Clear Lake. Minn., died May 22, 2009, at the St. Cloud (Minn.) Hospital.
Visitation was May 24 at the Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, Becker, and continued one hour prior to services Monday at the church in Becker.
Funeral services were May 25 at Becker Baptist Church, Becker, Minn., with Rev. Rob Olsen officiating.
Burial was in the Becker Cemetery.

Crofton — Robert F. Uhing, 73, Crofton, died May 10, 2009, at the Bloomfield Good Samaritan Center, Bloomfield, after suffering from cancer for a year.
Visitation, with a vigil service and video tribute, was May 12 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Crofton, under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Crofton, and continued one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.
Mass of Christian Burial was May 13 at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Crofton, with Rev. Michael Schmitz officiating.
Burial was in the St. Rose of Lima Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers were his grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Vernon Arens, David Arens, Larry Koch, John Goeken, Jr., Tom Uhing and Kevin Uhing.

Pallbearers were Gene’s grandchildren Greg Rethwisch, Kyle Henn, Matt Leinen, Doug Rethwisch, Blake Rethwisch, Nick Leiting, Kurtis Leiting, Kris Leiting and Haley Henn.
Interment was in Elmwood Cemetery, Carroll.

Burial, with military honors by the Carroll American Legion, was in Carroll Cemetery.
