LAUREL — Close to 100 teachers did their homework on how schools can still provide a quality education while cutting costs.
Educators and administration from Laurel-Concord, Coleridge, Newcastle and Wynot Schools put their heads together at the Innovation Labs workshop to come up with ways to improve the inter-local agreement between the four schools.

LAUREL — Large white boards and colored markers were used for communication for a portion of the Innovation Labs workshop which was held at the Laurel-Concord School on Jan. 15 and 16.
Messages were left by patrons, parents, students and teachers from the four school districts — Laurel-Concord, Coleridge, Newcastle and Wynot.
The words on the many white boards left a trail of the past and what the future could hold for the four schools that are working together in an inter-local agreement for sharing.

Schools share ideas

LAUREL — Leaders from four area schools who joined forces to share staff and expenses spent time Friday grading the results of a two-day workshop to promote unity and cost-sharing ideas.
The Innovation Labs Workshop was held Thursday and Friday at the Laurel-Concord school. Students, staff, patrons and administrators from Wynot, Coleridge, Newcastle and Laurel-Concord all participated in the workshop.
A session for school board members was held at the end of the workshop so an assessment of the event could be made.

LAUREL — Laurel-Concord School hosted the third annual Innovation Labs, which is a workshop aimed at identifying problems and finding solutions.
The carefully managed workshop is used to solve complex problems and create breakthrough solutions.
Superintendent Dan Hoesing spoke during the workshop to those who had come from Laurel-Concord, Coleridge, Newcastle and Wynot School Districts.
Hoesing reminded them of the three main goals the schools have had since they became involved in an inter-local agreement.
*Maintain a quality education program for all students.
*Operate in the most efficient manner possible.
*Maintain a school in every community.

McGregor elected Co. Commission chairman

HARTINGTON — Dave McGregor, Hartington, was elected last week as Cedar County Commission Chairman.
After two years of service on the Cedar County Commission, McGregor is now taking his turn as chairman for the first time.
McGregor said his job won’t change a lot. It’s just more intense, he said.

Lady Blue tosses Wausa to the side

COLERIDGE — The Lady Blue easily disposed of Lewis and Clark Conference powerhouse Wausa here Friday to move to 10-1 on the year.
The Lady Blue raced past Wausa 58-35 in the contest.
Stephanie Banks put the Lady Vikings on top early but the lead was short lived.
Coleridge took control after that by putting together an 11-0 run. Kelsey Papenhausen capped the run when she connected on a bucket and a free throw with 3:10 left in the opening quarter.

Bulldogs get back in win column

COLERIDGE — The Coleridge Bulldogs edged Wausa 58-50 in Lewis and Clark Conference acton Jan. 16.
The win gives the Bulldogs a 5-6 record and snaps a two-game losing streak.
Seth Schroeder had a monster night for the ‘Dawgs scoring 24 points, most of them from the paint.

ALBION — Alvena Dorthea (Grandt) Benson, 95, Albion, died Jan. 11, 2009, at the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Home, Albion.
Visitation was Jan. 13 at Levander Funeral Home, Albion.
Funeral services were Jan. 14 at Zion Lutheran Church, Albion, with Rev. Larry Sydow officiating.
Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Albion.
Pallbearers were Alan, Curtis, Russell, and Rodney Benson, Dan Christenson, Jason Reynoldson, and Bradley and Bruce Brunk.
Honorary pallbearers were Doug Christenson, Debra Bittner, Deanna VanDeWalle, Chad and Angela Reynoldson and Brian Brunk.
