HARTINGTON — One of the most well-known people of the community will soon be leaving.
Father John Peitramale will be leaving Hartington in June for a new assignment as pastor at St. Pius X parish and school in Omaha.

Local residents share memories of Mission Trip

HARTINGTON — Three residents of Hartington recently made a few memories that will last a lifetime.
Several months ago Pastor Bob Byran had told his congregation at Trinity Lutheran Church that sometimes it is necessary to work at creating some memories.
“Plan for something out of the ordinary,” said Byran.

Cedar County Theatre presents new production

HARTINGTON — The Cedar County Theatre proudly presents Radio T.B.S. (Trailer Park Broadcasting Scandals), a comedy directed by Shelley Lammers.
The radio station is set at the Luna Del Mar Manufactured Home Oasis (fancy name for trailer park) and Monkey Emporium in Central Florida. Vesta Poteet (Maggie Fleming) and Dixie Mandrell (Roni Lammers) are on the radio reporting the daily gossip. Missy Goode (Sally Opfer) calls in from Memphis with an adventure at Graceland.

Report shows cost of education is rising

DENVER — Public Schools Spent $9,138 Per Student in 2006
School districts in the United States spent an average of $9,138 per student in fiscal year 2006, an increase of $437 from 2005, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report released today.
Public Education Finances: 2006 offers a comprehensive look at the revenues and expenditures of public school districts at the national and state levels. The report includes detailed tables that allow for the calculation of per pupil expenditures. Highlights from these tables include spending on instruction, support services, construction, salaries and benefits of the more than 15,000 school districts. Public school districts include elementary and secondary school systems.

Early voting has begun

HARTINGTON — People interested in voting early for the May Primary election may now do so with an Early Ballot at the Cedar County Clerk’s office.
Monday was the first day the early ballots were available, said Cedar County Clerk Dave Dowling.
People who are not yet registered to vote in the May 13 election have until April 25 to register.

Obituary - Mary Burbach

HARTINGTON — Mary Slyvia Burbach, 86, Hartington, died April 1, 2008, at Parkview Haven Nursing Home, Coleridge.
Visitation and a rosary were held at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington. A Vigil Service and Video Tribute were held later at Holy Family (Immaculate Conception) Catholic Church, St. Helena. Visitation continued one hour prior to services at the church.

Obituary - Phyllis Dirks

DIXON — Phyllis Josephine Dirks, 99, Dixon, died March 20, 2008.
Funeral services were March 24 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Laurel.
Phyllis was born Nov. 17, 1918, at Dixon, to Paul and Rhoda (McCormack) Hanson. She graduated from Concord High School in 1936 and received her BS in education from Wayne State College. During WWII, she worked for the federal government in Alaska transmitting weather reports via morse code. She was a rural schoolteacher in Cedar County, taught at Dixon Public School and Laurel-Concord Elementary School. Phyllis married Earl Dirks Nov. 30, 1946. The couple lived on a farm near Laurel until Earl’s death in 1963.

A Christian Service was held April 8 at the United Methodist Church, Laurel, with Rev. Murry J. Johnston officiating.
Pallbearers were Gary Anderson, Randy Graf, Loren Park, Louis Tolles and Glen Olson.

Obituary - Marjorie Richison

NORMAN, Okla. — Marjorie Jane (Wilson) Richison, 66, Norman, Okla., died April 6, 2008, in Norman.
A Memorial Service was held April 9 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Norman, Okla., with the Rev. Dwight Helt officiating.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home, Norman.
Margie was born Sept. 1, 1941, in Little Rock, Ark., to Robert R. and Emily G. Wilson. She graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1959, and the University of Nebraska College of Nursing in Omaha in 1963. Margie married Richard Randall Richison July 9, 1966, in Nebraska City. They moved to Oklahoma City in 1967 and to Norman in 1973.
Margie was a Registered Nurse for the Norman Hospital Emergency Department and for the Norman Clinic. She was a Nursing Instructor for the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing and the Moore Norman Technology Center Nursing Program. She learned to fly at the University of Oklahoma Department of Aviation and became a Ground School and Flight Instructor for Oklahama University.
She was a member of the 99s, an International Organization of Women Pilots. She won first place in two Okie Derby Air Races, and flew in the last two transcontinental women’s Air Race Classics. She was the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Women Pilots in Oklahoma City. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the PEO. She was a CASA Volunteer, and she was named the Junior League and the United Way “Volunteer of the Year” in Norman in 1998.
She loved to travel and visited China, Russia, Africa, Ireland, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. Each summer of her life she visited Pelican Lake, Minn., and in 1992 she wrote a book, “Living Near to Nature’s Heart,” The History of the Pelican Lake Outing Club.
She loved her family and adored her four grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Randy Richison of Norman; daughters, Cindy and husband Shannon Moreaux of Bozeman, Mont., and Diane and husband G. A. Butler of Blanchard, Okla.; grandchildren, Hannah and Jack Moreaux of Bozeman, Mont., and Ethan and Grayson Butler of Blanchard; brother, George Wilson and wife Kay of Tonto Verde, Ariz. Margie was a niece of the late James L. Gray, Sr. and Amy F. Ravenscroft, both of Coleridge.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

CREIGHTON — Sally J. Scott, 66, Creighton, died April 3, 2008, at Faith Regional Health Services, Norfolk.
Graveside Services were April 7 at the Ponca Valley Cemetery, Verdel, with Kerry Fernau presiding.
Pallbearers were Charles Scott, Michael Moss, Thomas Moss, Timothy Moss, Jamie Brewer and Thomas Brewer.
Wintz Funeral Home, Crofton, is in charge of arrangements.
Sally J. Scott was born March 5, 1943, in Crofton, to Orrin and Mary (Love) Brewer. She was raised in Crofton and lived in various other communities. She married Vere Eugene Scott Dec. 20, 1967, in Neligh. Sally has lived in Creighton for the past 36 years where she was a lifetime cook.
She worked at the Blackhorse Inn & Drover Steakhouse, Creighton.
Sally loved to hunt and fish. She enjoyed camping, her flower garden, playing cards and baking pies. She also painted and received many ribbons at the county and state fairs. She also received a ribbon for her painting entered for the habitat stamp.
Sally is survived by her husband, Gene Scott, Creighton; five children and spouses, Timothy and Deb Moss, Harlan, Iowa; Thomas and Darcy Moss, Springfield, Ore.; Michael and Julie Moss, Creighton; Charles Scott, Creighton; Tracey and Thomas Bitsos, Yankton, S.D.; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Rodney Brewer, Cheshire, Ore.; Thomas and Ellen Brewer, Verdigre; Jamie Brewer, Longmont, Colo.
