Judge tosses feedlot case out of court

August 11th, 2009 · No Comments

HARTINGTON —A petition filed in District Court to stop a 5,000 head feedlot from being located within one mile of the Village of Coleridge has been thrown out.
District Judge William Binkard has issued an order to dismiss a petition filed by the “Concerned Citizens of Coleridge,” which asked the Coleridge Village Board to reverse their decision on the conditional use permit for the feedlot.
After reviewing the arguments and briefs, Binkard found the “Concerned Citizens of Coleridge” did not have a legal standing to bring the action to District Court. The order also said the petition had a jurisdictional defect.

HARTINGTON — Judge William Binkard will determine in early August if a lawsuit against the Coleridge Village Board will be dismissed.
The issue concerns a conditional-use permit which would allow a feedlot within one mile of Coleridge. A lawsuit was then filed to oppose the move — although a final decision on the issue could be a long way down the road.
Three attorneys presented arguments before Judge Binkard on Monday.
Binkard gave the attorneys an opportunity to file briefs to support their arguments concerning the lawsuit.

Memorial Day keeps family coming ‘home’ year after year

May 26th, 2009 · 1 Comment

COLERIDGE — Observing Memorial Day remains a strong tradition for a family that grew up in Coleridge.
The parents, Clarence and Helen Vock, are now deceased, but the lessons of patriotism and the importance of decorating graves on Memorial Day still linger on with their children.
Even though all but one of the six children have moved away, most of them still return to Coleridge every year to decorate the graves of family members and honor the veterans.
“It was a part of life at our house when we were growing up,” said Jacie Burbach. “You did not make any other plans for Memorial Day.”
This year was no different as the families of Jim Vock, Joan (Vock) Cautrell, Jacie (Vock) Burbach and Julie (Vock) Murphy stopped by area cemeteries and gathered at the Burbach home in Coleridge for a time of fellowship.

Coleridge School Board must wait for state aid figures

May 6th, 2009 · No Comments

COLERIDGE — Coleridge School Board members will not learn the amounts of state aid or stimulus funds the school will receive for close to a month.
The stimulus funds for schools could end up supplementing the money for the state aid package.
Any stimulus money that is received by schools, whether it is part of the state aid or not, will have a lot of strings attached.
“There will need to be a lot of documentation on how it is spent,” said Supt. Dan Hoesing.
The state aid will not be certified until June 1 according to Hoesing.

COLERIDGE —  Hats, hats, hats — everyone was wearing a hat at the Mother/Daughter Hat Party in Coleridge on Saturday.
Over 190 people showed up at noon for the salad luncheon and Hat Party, which was sponsored by Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Pastor Andreas Stein’s devotion was taken from only one verse in the sixteenth chapter of Romans.
He talked about the countless hours mothers invest in the lives of their children.
“Mothers plant seeds of love,” Stein said. “It is a mother’s divine calling. Planting seeds of love is a God-given talent.”
The afternoon was filled with music, a variety of poems and readings, and a program that was titled “My Pattern for Living,” along with a lot of laughter.
