Johanns Will Be In Area Wednesday

HARTINGTON — Former Neb. Governor and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Johanns will be in Hartington Wednesday to listen to citizens’ concersn.

Johanns will appear at the Hartington Senior Center from 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday.

Johanns is running on the Republican ticket to replace Chuck Hagel in the U.S. Senate. Hagel announced earlier this year that he does not want to serve another term in office.

Johanns easily won the primary election in May, and will now face Hastings College professor Scott Kleeb in the November general election.

Report shows cost of education is rising

DENVER — Public Schools Spent $9,138 Per Student in 2006
School districts in the United States spent an average of $9,138 per student in fiscal year 2006, an increase of $437 from 2005, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report released today.
Public Education Finances: 2006 offers a comprehensive look at the revenues and expenditures of public school districts at the national and state levels. The report includes detailed tables that allow for the calculation of per pupil expenditures. Highlights from these tables include spending on instruction, support services, construction, salaries and benefits of the more than 15,000 school districts. Public school districts include elementary and secondary school systems.

Community leaders invade Lincoln

LINCOLN —  A group of Hartington citizens with economic development on their minds spent much of last Friday visiting with executive and legislative officials at the Capitol, seeking opportunities to recruit businesses to invest in the Hartington area and bring jobs.
Among this civic-minded group were Mayor Bill Yates, Carla Becker, Hartington’s Economic Development Coordinator, her husband, Mike, Chris Miller, Economic Development Corporation president, and Dennis Sturek, member of the Economic Development Corporation Board.

Knox County picks up DEQ grant

LINCOLN — Knox County was one of several Nebraska governmental entities to receive  Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality grants this week.
DEQ Director Mike Linder announced the awarding of $1,614,715 in 68 grants for litter cleanup, recycling, and public education programs and activities.
The Knox County grant of $5,279 was awarded to the county Dept. of Roads. The funds will be used for a used oil burner to be used in the county’s vehicle maintanence facility in Wausa.
Creighton also received a DEQ grant. That community applied for funding for its recycling program. The city will receive $5,900 to aid in its recycling expansion efforts.
Funds for the Litter Reduction and Recycling Grant Program are generated from a fee charged to certain manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers of products that commonly contribute to litter.

Neb. group works to develop wind energy potential

LINCOLN — A group has been formed to work with state and federal officials to build more wind energy projects in Nebraska.
Two state senators and an agricultural leader announced last week the formation of the Nebraska Wind Working Group to develop the state’s wind energy potential.  The Group is co-chaired by Dist. No. 40 Sen. Cap Dierks of Ewing, Omaha Sen. Don Preister, and John Hansen, President of the Nebraska Farmers Union; Larry Pearce, Nebraska Energy Office, serves as Vice-Chair.

Hartington residents fill Gov.’s Mansion

HARTINGTON — Over 70 Hartington area residents packed the Governor’s Mansion Sunday to help the Nebraska landmark celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Gov. Dave Heineman and First Lady Sally Ganem stood at the front door of the Georgian Colonial-style mansion and greeted area residents as they entered Sunday.
The private ceremony was organized as a joint effort by the Hartington Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Corporation and city of Hartington. The tmayor-yates-and-gov-heineman.jpghree local groups came together to present a gift from the residents of Hartington to the Governor’s Mansion.
The gift was presented to honor the three former Hartington residents — Gov. Ralph Brooks, Gov. Dwight Burney and Gov. Charles Thone — who served as Nebraska’s Governor, and lived in the mansion.
A public ceremony outside of the mansion was then held on Monday to officially unveil the glass etchings by Hartington artist Angie Gildersleeve Peitz.
The special events helped kick off a week full of celebrations to observe the 50th anniversary of the mansion. The Nebraska Governor’s residence, located just south of the Capitol, was built in 1957.

Hartington to present gift to Gov.’s Mansion

HARTINGTON — Past and present Hartington area residents will gather in Lincoln Sunday, Aug. 26 to help help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Governor’s Mansion by presenting a gift to the mansion.

The event begins at 2 p.m. at the mansion. At that time the gift, a glass etching, will be unveiled.

Sen. Dierks’ Freeholding Bill advances

LINCOLN — The Legislature advanced Dist. 40 Sen. Cap Dierks’ freeholding bill (LB219) with a voice vote to Final Reading after Dierks introduced an amendment to the bill that moves the deadline for landholders to file a petition with the freeholding board to July 15 for this year only. Next year the deadline returns to June 1.
