Cedar County Fair will be here in no time

HARTINGTON — The Cedar County Fair is the place to be July 15-19.
The fair kicks off with a big day on Wednesday with 4-H and Clover Kids Exhibits, which will be judged throughout the day.
To entertain young and old alike, the team penning event will be held at the rodeo arena, as well as a hypnotist and Mr. Illusion in the Grandstand area.
Thursday will be a full day of 4-H events followed by the free Hamburger Feed beginning at 5 p.m. Then get your boots and hats ready for the 9th Annual MSRA/IRA rodeo, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the rodeo arena.

Ban will snuff out smoking next week

COLERIDGE  — So long smoke, hello clean air.
A statewide smoking ban takes effect on June 1.
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and local health departments will be working with businesses to help them comply with Nebraska’s new smoke-free law.
On June 1, every indoor workplace and public place in Cedar County, as well as across the state, must be smoke-free. The act was designed to protect the public health and welfare of people.

Relay for Life slated for this weekend

HARTINGTON –  Cedar County walkers will go around the clock in the battle against cancer during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life which will be held in Hartington this weekend.
Teams of enthusiastic citizens will gather at the Hartington Community Complex for an overnight relay from 7 p.m. on May 30 until 7 a.m. on May 31.

News reporter dies unexpectedly in Lincoln

LINCOLN — It may be a little more difficult for Northeast Nebraska residents to understand the bills and new laws coming out of the Legislature from now on.
Long-time Cedar County News legislative reporter and columnist Barb Burbach died Friday in Lincoln.
Burbach, 46, covered the Legislature for the Cedar County News from 1997 right up to her death. Her final article appears elsewhere on this page.
“Barbara had a genuine interest in the legislative process and especially issues affecting agriculture and northeast Nebraska,” said former Dist. 40 Sen. Doug Cunningham. “She loved the community she worked for. She loved Wynot, agriculture, and small farms. She cared about these issues and asked questions and reported on issues that the big papers didn’t seem to care about.”

Hartington Q125 battles rain

web-q125-street-sweeping.jpgHARTINGTON — The clock turned a step back here Friday morning.

People could be seen in 1890s costumes throughout the downtown area Friday morning as the festivities began for the town’s Q125 celebration.

The Women’s Temperance League could even be seen sweeping the streets as punishment for another contest lost to the Humdingers.

A Ladie’s Luncheon was held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the VFW Club. The luncheon featured a talk explaining why the women of the 1800s wore the clothes they did. It also featured a fashion show.

Johanns Will Be In Area Wednesday

HARTINGTON — Former Neb. Governor and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Johanns will be in Hartington Wednesday to listen to citizens’ concersn.

Johanns will appear at the Hartington Senior Center from 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday.

Johanns is running on the Republican ticket to replace Chuck Hagel in the U.S. Senate. Hagel announced earlier this year that he does not want to serve another term in office.

Johanns easily won the primary election in May, and will now face Hastings College professor Scott Kleeb in the November general election.

Pietramale will leave in June

Local residents share memories of Mission Trip

Several months ago Pastor Bob Byran had told his congregation at Trinity Lutheran Church that sometimes it is necessary to work at creating some memories.

Cedar County Theatre presents new production

HARTINGTON — The Cedar County Theatre proudly presents Radio T.B.S. (Trailer Park Broadcasting Scandals), a comedy directed by Shelley Lammers.
The radio station is set at the Luna Del Mar Manufactured Home Oasis (fancy name for trailer park) and Monkey Emporium in Central Florida. Vesta Poteet (Maggie Fleming) and Dixie Mandrell (Roni Lammers) are on the radio reporting the daily gossip. Missy Goode (Sally Opfer) calls in from Memphis with an adventure at Graceland.

HARTINGTON — Over 50 years of experience in the auto parts business is being consolidated into a partnership this week.

Two Hartington businessmen are bringing two businesses together to provide better service for their customers.
Hartington Auto Supply, which is owned by Tim Leise, has been in business for 28 years, while John Lounsbery has put in over 25 years in his Quality Auto Parts store.
